Days Worth Celebrating: August

The Dog Days of summer are almost over! (Officially July 3 rd through August 11 th , 2022) But that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate National Dog Day on August 26th .

August may not contain any of the big Hallmark holidays, but don't let that stop you from finding reasons to celebrate. If National Goat Cheese Month isn’t enough of a reason to throw a party here’s a helpful little list of noteworthy days in August.

2nd National Coloring Book Day: Who doesn’t like coloring?? It’s fun for all ages and a great (and cheap) way to express your creative energy.

National Ice Cream Sandwich Day: Pick up a few at the store or maybe try and make your own. This recipe from Simply Recipes sounds super yummy and super easy and now I know what I’m doing with the rest of my day.

4th National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day: You may sense a trend here… there are a lot of days celebrating sweet treats. Maybe I should stop gathering these lists while I’m hungry. Sorry, not sorry.

5th National Water Balloon Day: (1st Friday in August) Time for a good old-fashioned water balloon fight! Want to mix it up a bit? Remember the show American Gladiators? Set up your own obstacle course in the front yard. While trying to get to the end, kids run from umbrella to umbrella seeking shelter while someone else tries to hit them with water balloons. One part dodgeball. One part water park. Lots of fun.

6th National Root Beer Float Day: Is there anything more satisfying than a root beer float on a hot day? I can’t think of many.

9th National Book Lovers Day: I kind of wish every day was Book Lovers Day. Curling up with a good book is one of life’s greatest pleasures.

12th Perseids meteor shower: Okay, August 8th might be Global Sleep Under the Stars Night but if I only get to lay out and look at the stars one night a month, I’m picking the one that has an epic meteor shower. Perseids peaks in the early morning hours of August 12th when there is a potential of up to 150 meteors per hour!

17th National Thrift Shop Day: Finding used treasures at the thrift store is one of my favorite things, but that wasn’t always the case. As a kid, I was so embarrassed shopping at a second-hand store. When did the shift happen? I can’t really say but it’s a magical feeling finding a dress (with pockets) that fits like a glove for 5$. Here’s a twist- if you don’t want to bring anything new into the house, maybe today is an excuse to donate some unwanted items to your local Thrift Shop. Sounds like a winner of a day either way you go.

26th National Women’s Equality Day: On this day in 1920 women in the United States won the right to vote. While Suffragette might not be appropriate for all ages maybe Mary Poppins is a fun way to start a conversation about the importance of voting and the journey to secure that right for women.

28th National Bow Tie Day: Bow ties are just plain fun. It’s an inarguable fact.

Looking forward to the 17th! I’m always up for an excuse to go to the thrift store :-)
